Pain is one of the ways our bodies protect themselves. It is completely normal and while it is never convenient, it is always vital, pain informs us when something is wrong, which forces us to take action to prevent further damage. Without pain, we would not be alerted to danger or injury in our bodies.

What causes pain?

Each structure in the body has sensors called nerve endings. These sensors respond to injury by sending signals to the brain. it is only after the brain receives and interprets these different signals that pain occurs. Ultimately the brain is what determines whether we feel pain (100% of the time). That does not mean the pain is not real. All pain is real. The amount of pain we feel, however, is not necessarily a direct indication of how much tissue damage there is. That is good news! But… that does make things a little confusing.

What Can I Do About this Pain?

You are the owner of your pain and you have the most power to manage and decrease it. The first step is to make sure you understand your problem and are well aware of the possible solutions. Often the solution involves working with health care professionals who collaborate to address all of the facets of your problem and the pain that results from it.

When looking for qualified caregivers to work with it is important that you understand how their proposed help will make you better. Make sure ALL of your questions are answered in a way you understand and remember to avoid total dependence on any practitioner. This is your pain; take control. It is also important to have measurable goals to assess whether or not you are getting better. A goal is something that gives you a way of measuring your progress.

In addition, look for characteristics such as compassion, enthusiasm, curiosity about new ideas, and expertise when attempting to find good clinicians. Remember their main purpose should be to help you master your situation.
